ekey integration for the Gira HomeServer

The integration of ekey fingerprint scanners into the Gira HomeServer opens up new possibilities for Gira system partners and system integrators in project-based building automation.

In this context, the ekey fingerprint scanner serves not only as an access solution but also as a unique identifier: The HomeServer can respond to user and device events and use them to trigger project-specific logics, scenes, or notifications.

This page is intended for Gira system partners, system integrators, and experienced KNX/HomeServer planners who wish to use ekey as a professional integration solution in residential and non-residential construction projects.

In many projects, access is viewed as a standalone, isolated solution. However, the real added value comes when access is viewed as part of building automation.

A fingerprint scanner not only grants access but also provides unique information about who is entering a building, an area, or a door. This identity can be used in the Gira HomeServer as a trigger for further logics.

Access thus becomes the project-specific trigger for automations, notifications, and user-dependent workflows.

This allows you to do the following in the project:

• Integrate access events into HomeServer logics in a targeted manner
• Use user information as triggers for scenes and systems
• Define automations based on a person, a door, or a fingerprint scanner
• Create a conceptual link between access, presence, and building functions

The focus is on providing additional convenience for end customers and on a clear integration logic for professional projects.

ekey provides secure identification and access control. Biometric recognition, user administration, and authorization remain within the ekey system.

The Gira HomeServer processes events and uses them to control logics, scenes, notifications, and systems.

The HomeServer responds to user and device events, but does not interfere with access decisions. This separation is particularly relevant for professional projects, as it ensures that responsibilities remain clearly defined.

This allows you to retrieve presence information from confirmed access events within the project and use it for scenes or state logics.

Examples:

• user-dependent building scenes
• activation of certain operating states
• presence logics for residential or non-residential buildings
• combination with lighting, shading, heating, or other systems

Unique identification enables differentiated logic processing in the Gira HomeServer.

This allows you to trigger functions in the project based on the identified user, for example, for different user groups, roles, or authorizations.

Examples:

• different scenes for each user
• detailed notifications
• project-specific authorizations
• user-specific sequences

ekey events can serve as the basis for notifications, status messages, or security-related logics.

This allows you to create transparent workflows within the project without having to delegate the access decision to the HomeServer itself.

Examples:

• notifications for defined access events
• status changes in the building
• event logging within the project logic
• combination with alarm, notification, or visualization concepts

This integration expands the capabilities of building automation but does not alter the basic security logic of access control.

The access decision remains in the ekey system. The Gira HomeServer receives events from the ekey system and uses them as triggers for further logics.

This means:

• ekey identifies and decides
• The HomeServer responds
• Access security is not being handed over to the automation system
• Security-related events, such as an unknown or unauthorized finger or user, can be processed by logics and contribute to greater security in the building

This clear separation ensures a structured project architecture and reduces misunderstandings during planning, implementation, and support.

Integration is achieved via the Ethernet interface and the “CASAVIONE ekey bionyx Interface” logic module. The actions are defined in the HS/FS Expert and processed entirely within the Gira HomeServer/FacilityServer.

The ekey systems are compatible with the Gira HomeServer, version 4.11 and later.
